NamWater defends use of international contractors

The Namibia Water Corporation (NamWater) has responded to claims from the Namibia Local Businesses Association about contracts being awarded to international contractors.

The water utility says its decisions are guided by the need for technical expertise and adherence to the Public Procurement Act while prioritising reliable water services for Namibians.

“NamWater remains committed to transparency, fairness, and compliance with Namibia’s Public Procurement Act,” the company says in a statement, adding that local contractors are given preference whenever they meet technical and financial requirements.

However, NamWater highlights issues with some local projects, such as the Omahenene–Olushandja canal reconstruction and the Goblenz Reservoir replacement, which were delayed or abandoned by contractors.

“Work on the Omahenene–Olushandja canal reconstruction began in February 2021, but it remains incomplete, with one contractor abandoning the site,” NamWater says.

The utility cited challenges, including abandoned sites and failures to mobilise, with five projects, valued at N$315 million.

“These challenges emphasise the importance of engaging contractors who meet all technical and financial requirements,” NamWater notes.

NamWater reaffirms its support for local businesses and vowed to enhance local contractor performance while maintaining its mandate to deliver reliable water infrastructure.
