Namibia’s Fastest at the Easter Drags

Easter weekend has come and gone and once again, and played host to the Easter drags in Walvis Bay.

On Saturday, 4 April, Union Street was once again packed with fast cars and even faster mouths. Onlookers were treated to one of the fiercest line-ups to date, even though a few of the familiar faces were nowhere to be seen.

Frankie de Reberiera, suffering gearbox issues, failed to make it to the starting line giving Pieter Sternberg an easy win in the battle of the MK1s with an impressing crossing of 14.766 seconds. York Rust nailed second place with a time of 15.536 while Lorenco Calaca trailed with 15.835.

Once again the FRC tuned Golf V GTI, dubbed Monster, was out in full force and reaffirmed its position as fastest front wheel drive vehicle in Namibia as well as the first front wheel vehicle to hit a 12.541 second pass. Freddie Stander managed to just nudge past Monster in his Mercedes Benz A45 AMG with a pass of 12.538.

Ronn Rittmann and Garven Theron battled their Fiesta STs and ultimately Theron came out on top with a run of 14.855. Ruaan Viviers, who is no stranger to the drag strip, once more brought his Nissan GTR to play and recorded the fastest four-wheeled quarter mile time of 11.276.

Only a handful of motorcycles attended the event and competition was fierce amongst them. Fastest run of the day was recorded by Frederick Kotze on a Suzuki GSXR1000, closely followed by Le-Roy Taljaard on a Honda CBR1000. Wentzel Smal piloted his Hyabusa to a respectable 10.535.

Once again the Walvis Bay drags were a huge success, made even better by fully functioning timing equipment and organisation. Hopefully the next event will see even more competitors line up to put their cars where their mouths are.
