NAMIBIAN music makers and fans will be happy to know that locally produced music will enjoy major prominence with the upcoming launch of THISTV.
The Namibian-based TV channel, which will be aired via NBC’s Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) platform, is a first for the country and a welcome relief for artists who were getting less airplay on South African music channels.
A 24-hour music and entertainment channel, THISTV will bring a wide variety of popular urban music and many more show formats including reality TV, charts text shows and countdowns. The channel is dedicated exclusively to urban music (hip-hop, R&B, dancehall, reggae, kwaito, Afro pop, electronic dance music and chart music, with occasional alternative rock).
Trailblazing Afrikaans musician and entrepreneur Wambuseun says that the TV channel has been in the works for 16 years. “I have been working on the project for 16 years and saving up my pennies for it when NBC’s DTT platform became available,” he said.
Speaking of the challenges of getting Namibian music aired on channels like Channel O and MTV Base, Wambuseun says that THISTV will cater mainly to Namibians and will become the driving force of Namibian entertainment. “We don’t only cater for music but will also air series, music documentaries and lifestyle shows,” he said.
Voicing the same sentiments, one of the producers on the channel, Noel the Entertainer, says that the channel is dedicated to getting viewers involved in the shows. “We don’t just want people to watch, we want them to participate in the process,” he said.
Expressing joy at the prospect of having a Namibian channel dedicated to music and entertainment, songbird and award-winning artist Blossom says that THISTV is definitely good news. “This means so much. It’s great to have our own music channel and I hope that it will be broadcast outside the country as well,” she said.
Viewers can expect exclusive interviews with their favourite celebrities and original features related to urban culture such as fashion, dance, sports, lifestyle and cinema.
Tune in to channel 7 on Thursday for the premiere airing of this exciting channel that will surely add more spark to the Namibian entertainment scene.
