Namibia’s national under-17 football team travelled to Walvis Bay yesterday to prepare for the bi-annual Four Nations International Tournament at the Kuisebmond Stadium, involving Namibia, Westphalia, Ghana and South Africa from Wednesday 23 to Easter Sunday 27 March 2016.
Team Namibia is selected from players who took part in the 2015 Skorpion Zinc Regional Under-17 Tournament held at Tsumeb as well as trials held at the NFA Technical Centre since January 2016 and interim team coach Timo Tjongarero explained their mission to Walvis Bay.
“In 2014, Namibia finished bottom against the same countries that are participating again this year and we need to improve on that. This time around it is so significant because we need to try the best combinations for the teams ahead of the 2017 CAF u17 Africa Cup of Nations Qualifiers against Botswana in June,” he said.
Tjongarero adds that the fact that the tournament is played in the month of Namibia 26th independence anniversary, encourages the team to keep the festivities going.
“It is one year on for our country’s president and as a team we will do our part to entertain and keep the momentum of nation building and celebrations going with some good performances for the Namibians who will be at the Kuisebmond Stadium in Walvis Bay,” said Tjongarero, who will be assisted by Pauhl Shakes Mallembu.
The tournament will be played from 23 to 27 March with host Namibia opening against the defending champions Ghana at 16h00 on Wednesday, 23 March while South Africa and Westphalia will meet at 18h00.
On Thursday, 24 March, Ghana will play Westphalia at 16h00 and Namibia will face South Africa at 18h00. On Good Friday, South Africa and Ghana clash at 16h00 before Namibia takes on Westphalia.
Saturday will be a rest day, while Easter Sunday will see a contest for third-place at 15h00, to be followed by the final at 17h00. The teams will depart from the coast by Easter Monday.
