THE masses have spoken. Music fans from across Africa, that is. And … ta-ra, ta-ra the shoes have it!
Watched the best part of this year’s 2010 Channel O Music Video Awards, held in Sandton, Jo’burg, on Thursday night and was in shock and awe at the foot bling. Sjoe, the shoes. You could have knocked me down with a Manolo Blahnik! The ladies strutted the stage in an amazing array of killer heels: screaming pink, Halloween black, shimmering silver, glittering gold … you name it. When it came to the guys, patent leather and mafia-type, elongated – so limo long it felt like they needed a chauffeur – ice-pick points, aka ‘cockroach killers’, ruled. Eish, a shine of the times!Don’t know who was trying to make what point, but there were enough sharp edges to sink the Titanic.OK, back to the real deal. The music. Disappointingly neither of Namibia’s two nominees, Gazza and Fishman, won in their category, Best Kwaito. The award went to South Africa’s Big Nuz, featuring DJ Tira, for his hit ‘Umlilo’.Still, Fishman and Gazza made the select six in their genre – chosen from among the top stars across Africa. Being in the final mix at the Channel Os will only have broadened continent-wide exposure to their beats. Was also cool to see South African artist Pro give a shout-out to Fishman when Pro went up to receive his award for Most Gifted Southern Video, for ‘Sekele’.The Most Gifted Video of the Year category went to South African hip-hop trio, Teargas for ‘Party 101’.Most Gifted Female saw Mo’Cheddah light up the stage, while Black Coffee headlined in the Most Gifted Male Category. Other winners included D’banj (‘Fall in Love’), P-Square, Obita, 2-Face, and Somalian-born global star K’Naan, who won the Special Recognition Award. You can check out all the winners in the 14 categories at: http://mva.channelo.tv/2010/11/and-the-winners-are/The event was broadcast live for the first time this year. Winners were voted for by the public.
