Namibia has joined a group of countries with instant payment infrastructure, with the country ranking among the world’s top 50 nations and the fourth in Africa to introduce a fast payment solution.
This was highlighted on Tuesday during the launch of the Payments Association of Namibia (PAN) 2025 annual report and the celebration of the association’s 20th anniversary in Windhoek.
Bank of Namibia deputy governor Leonie Dunn says the country’s instant payment solution, which went live in mid-June, reflects years of collaboration.
“We are now really among the top 50 countries globally that has a fast payment solution. On the African continent, I think we are the fourth. That says a lot about what we are doing as a collective,” Dunn says.
PAN acting chief executive Mbapeua Kauova says the association has transformed alongside Namibia’s payment landscape over the past two decades.
“We began by establishing the governance structures and collaborative platforms that underpin the national payment system,” he says.
He says PAN later supported the migration from paper-based payments to electronic transactions before focusing on digital transformation, innovation and payment system resilience.
Kauova says the 2025 financial year also saw the successful transition from the PAN management council to the PAN management board, strengthening governance and strategic oversight, while supporting the development of the National Payment System Vision and Strategy 2026–2030.
He adds that PAN generated N$10.6 million in revenue during the 2025 financial year.
