N$1m boost for Go Green Fund

NEDBANK Namibia underlined their strong support for conservation by handing over a donation of nearly N$1 million to the Namibia Nature Foundation (NNF) for the Go Green Fund.

Making the donation of N$930 000 at a function in Windhoek on Tuesday evening, Christopher Chipeio, head of corporate governance and company secretary of Nedbank Namibia said this was part of Nedbank’s social responsibility.

The initiative is a partnership between Nedbank Namibia and NNF.

“Founded in 2001, this partnership celebrates 18 years this year.” Angus Middleton, NNF executive director said at the handover.

According to Middleton, it is best for people and partnerships to develop initiatives towards sustaining the environment “we live in, and this partnership is an ideal example of this”.

The funds for this direct corporate social responsibility were raised through the home and vehicle divisions of Nedbank Namibia.

“Each time a house is purchased, a car is financed, Nedbank contributes directly towards the Go Green,” Chipeio said.

Environment minister Pohamba Shifeta, in his keynote address at the event said these kinds of partnerships help to reverse decades of over-exploitation that were rampant in pre-independence Namibia. “As the custodian of the natural resources, the ministry welcomes this significant investment,” Shifeta commented.

The minister added that the natural environment still faces many challenges such as poaching, human-wildlife conflict, climate change, lack of benefits for communities from natural resources extracted in their areas as well as environmental degradation.

Another speaker at the ceremony was media personality Kirsty Watermeyer, who contributed with the insight of women in nature conservation through a video that was presented to the audience.

She said people who live in conservancies are not always consulted conservation decisions.
