Mweya to attend WBC convention

NAMIBIAN boxing official Fillemon Mweya leaves for Cancun, Mexico today to attend the 57th annual convention of the World Boxing Council from 21 to 28 October.

It is the second time that Mweya has been invited by the WBC to attend their annual convention, after his first invitation to Ukraine last year, and he said he has now gained international recognition.

“This invitation is not a surprise to me, it comes through hard work, dedication, commitment and discipline. I attended the same event in Kyiev last year, and that’s where my recognition comes from. I gained an international diploma in refereeing/judging after I successfully passed the examination and now I am an international referee and judge,” he said.

Mweya said it was history in the making for Namibian boxing, and that he aimed to become the best referee in the world.

“Last year was just the beginning of the journey and now I am on the road to Mexico. I would like to be the best referee in the world and am inspired by the likes of Steve Willis, Tony Weeks and Kenny Byless,” he said.

Mweya said he will be meeting WBC champions like Deontay Wilder and Andy Ruiz Junior, while he will also attend an international Super Flyweight fight between Francisco Rodriquez of Mexico) and Gregorio Lebron of the Dominican Republic.

During the convention, Mweya will attend many activities like the WBC rating committee meeting, the gala dinner awards presentation, the general assembly, confederation meetings, and judge and referees seminars.

After last year’s convention, Mweya managed to get two international assignments, and was appointed to officiate a WBC silver title fight in Accra, Ghana, and a WBC world female super bantamweight title fight in Nairobi, Kenya.

Mweya thanked his sponsors who made his trip possible, namely Green Enterprise Solutions, Chief Justice Peter Shivute and Sibeya & Partners.
