The Motor Vehicle Accident Fund of Namibia has extended condolences to the families affected by a vehicle collision that claimed 14 lives near Mariental on Saturday morning.
In a statement released on Saturday, the MVA Fund assured the families of the people killed in the crash and the injured that they will receive appropriate funeral support and medical care.
“Family members are encouraged to contact their nearest MVA Fund service centre in Windhoek,” said MVA Fund chief executive Rosalia Martins-Hausiku.
Several police officers and Namibian Correctional Service (NCS) officers died in the head-on collision near Mariental.
Fourteen lives were lost along the B1 road approximately 10 kilometres from Mariental towards Kalkrand in the Hardap region when a police vehicle and an NCS vehicle were involved in a suspected head-on collision.
The accident reportedly took place at around 07h00.
A police van involved in the crash was carrying six passengers, including five officers and a civilian, while the NCS vehicle had 13 people on board.
The police said eleven members of the NCS, one member of the Namibian Police and two civilians died in the accident.
Other occupants of the vehicles were injured and transported to a hospital at Mariental. Some NCS members were reported to be critically injured.
