Swapo Erongo regional coordinator Daniel Muhuura said 8 February would be known as one of the darkest days in the country’s history, as Namibia has lost a liberation icon and leader.
Muhuura said that the late founding president Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma led with unwavering commitment and perseverance towards the liberation of Namibia, and will never be forgotten.
He noted that the peace and stability that Namibians enjoy comes from Nujoma’s introduction of national reconciliation, and that Namibians can freely communicate without fear or interruption.
He recalled Nujoma’s determination when presenting the case for Namibian independence to the United Nations, and his resolution to return to Namibia in 1966 with former president Hifikepunye Pohamba to prove their validity as representatives of the Namibian people.
“He will therefore be remembered through his perseverance towards the liberation struggle for independence of Namibia and for Swapo to be recognised as a sole and authentic representative of the Namibian people.”
Muhuura added that Nujoma’s death is also a great loss to the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region and the world, adding that his mission on earth has been accomplished successfully.
He expressed his condolences to the family of the late former president, the Swapo party and the entire Namibian nation.
