Mobile communications company MTC has denied a claim that more than N$1,2 billion has been funnelled from it to finance the legal representation of people charged in the Fishrot fishing quotas fraud, corruption and racketeering case.

This comes after Landless People’s Movement leader Bernadus Swartbooi, in a question to finance minister Iipumbu Shiimi that was tabled in the National Assembly on Wednesday, alleged that N$1,2 billion was funnelled from an MTC account to pay for the legal representation of accused persons in the Fishrot case.

“A systems administrator detected this transfer of money,” Swartbooi said.

Reacting to Swartbooi’s claim, MTC spokesperson Tim Ekandjo said the company strongly refuted the allegation.

“We are completely shocked and dismayed by these false and defamatory allegations. We have been operating in Namibia for 27 years and we have always maintained the highest standards of integrity and professionalism, and there is no truth in this allegation whatsoever,” Ekandjo said.
