SHE has opened shows for artists like Trey Songz, Stefan Ludik, Anthony Hamilton, Mafikizolo and is now about to launch her very first album.
Monique English is no stranger to the entertainment scene in Namibia and has so far released two singles, ‘Makes my Heart Go’ and ‘Destination’.
‘Since 1994’, her debut album, is to be launched this Saturday, 19 November at Lemon Tree in Eros, Windhoek.
English, petite and pretty with a huge voice, has also collaborated with other Namibian artists like KK, Kp Illest, Desmond and Ann Singer. In South Africa, she performed with Laurenzo Davids from Cape Town who has his own label, Vision Music Records.
“I always wanted to launch my own album. I think that is every up-and-coming artist’s dream. My album basically covers the highlights of my life as a teenager. I’ve written all of my songs with some assistance here and there from my producers. I’m sure my songs will appeal to youngsters and adults alike because it’s about heartbreak, peer pressure and just plain joy,” she explains.
She has been singing since the tender age of nine and laughingly remembers how her mom basically forced her into it. It’s then that the seed was planted and it didn’t take long for her to realise that she could actually sing.
“I vowed then and there to do this for the rest of my life.”
The title ‘Since 1994’ refers to her birth year but she’s been mesmerizing crowds with her immense talent and magnetic stage presence for 13 years. Born at Swakopmund and referred to as the girl with the angelic voice, English displays the deepest love and respect when she speaks about her mother, Zelda:
“My mother is the biggest part of my reason to succeed. I couldn’t have done it without my family.”
English is a part-time artist and is signed by Deal Done Records. The majority of the songs were produced by Glo Solani and also features the works of Araffath and Taz.
The elegant young woman is a huge fan of Rihanna and thinks she even sounds a little like her.
“Apart from the fact that I sound like me, I think there is little bit of Rihanna and Ariana Grande… but that’s just my opinion. Some people might think otherwise…”
