Miss Namibia Donates To Havana Primary School

Miss Namibia 2019, Nadja Breytenbach spent last Wednesday morning with the Grade 1 pupils at Havana Primary School, located in that informal settlement, where she handed over 90 abacuses worth N$3 000.

Every year, Miss Namibia aims to embody beauty through charity by working with the less privileged and serving as an example of purposeful living.

Breytenbach said she decided on a donation of abacuses after a conversation she had with the school principal.

“Together we decided to ask the teachers what the learners needed the most and they suggested abacuses. I am eternally grateful to the Johanniter Hostel in Otavi, which I visited at the end of 2019. I believed in my dream and they sponsored the money to buy the abacuses,” she said.

Breytenbach decided to work with Havana Primary School because it is located in a very impoverished community. She hopes to assist more schools in future, in terms of improving the pupils’ learning experience.

“The teachers and children received me with so much love. They were so grateful. I like donating to children because they are our future. I am inspired by the late South African anti-apartheid revolutionary, political leader and philanthropist, Nelson Mandela’s quote: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world’,” the psychology graduate said.

Shortly after Breytenbach scooped the Miss Namibia crown she made it clear that she was interested in helping the youth. She said her year as Miss Namibia thus far has been life-changing.

“I have had so many amazing experiences ranging from a trip to Opuwo, the exciting experience of participating in Miss Universe in Atlanta last year. I understand that being Miss Namibia is not only a huge honour, but also a great responsibility. My responsibilities will not end once my reign ends, it is a responsibility that I will proudly carry throughout the rest of my life. I really want to use my voice to help those who need it the most,” Breytenbach said.
