Ministry of health clarifies infant death at Berseba

The Ministry of Health and Social Services has issued a statement clarifying the circumstances surrounding the death of a two-month-old infant at Kainachas village, located in the Berseba constituency of the //Kharas region.

The incident occurred on Sunday night.

The ministry extends its condolences to the bereaved family.

According to the ministry, the infant was born at home on 5 May 5, and had received routine childhood immunisations, including the six-week and 10-week doses on 16 July.

The ministry says no signs of illness were observed either before or immediately after immunisations.

On 21 July, the family contacted nurses by telephone, reporting that the mother had found the infant unresponsive at home.

The police and Berseba clinic staff responded to the call, confirming that the baby showed no signs of life.

The infant was transported to Keetmanshoop hospital, where the baby was declared dead on arrival, indicating that the death occurred at home.

The body has since been taken to the Keetmanshoop mortuary for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death.

The ministry says it had not received any complaints of ill-health regarding the case prior to the incident.

The ministry also says claims of negligence on its part are unfounded.

The ministry has offered psycho-social support to the family.
