On a weekend away, we set out to the country estate north-east of Windhoek expecting the rustic rest we have come to know, only to be utterly amazed by the transformation.
The place is plush, folks.
Echoing the emphasis on natural light, metal and sumptuous décor of the Strand Hotel at Swakopmund, Midgard”;s modernisation takes the property to the next level in a trio of impressive dining and drinks areas.
First to catch one”;s eye is The Barn, which is the main dining room. Bright, airy and with a spray of orchids, The Barn boasts a lavish breakfast buffet in the morning and decadent, candlelit dinners by night.
For game lovers, Midgard offers game terrine, a four game pate and game burgers amidst an a la carte menu that includes a selection of pizzas, farm-style sharing platters, herb-baked tilapia and a delicious beer-braised lamb shank. The dining area also incorporates The Workshop, where guests can order coffee throughout the day and purchase homemade breads, pickles, pestos and preserves.
Priding itself on its garden-to-plate offerings, Midgard”;s menu has a particular boast. “Every piece of leafy salad green or vegetable is handpicked from our gardens,” it says. And, yes, every bite is as bright and as fresh as can be.
Add this to the impeccable and friendly service from Midgard”;s staff who serve The Barn, The Workshop and The Stoep, which is a Hamptons-style al fresco extension of The Barn, and it”;s no wonder patrons may explore further and discover an elegant reading lounge ahead of the newly renovated The Pumphouse.
If bougie bars replete with velvet solo seats are your thing, then make a beeline for this swanky new watering hole. Offering all-day aesthetics, an offbeat cocktail menu including a lemongrass and cucumber cooler, a chocolate mint collar and my personal favourite, the cherry and pepper heavy Gin Rocket, The Pumphouse is a sexy spot in which to spend the afternoon, catch a soccer game and order some bar grub.
A pleasant surprise for those who haven”;t been back to the country estate in a while, Midgard has a welcome new coat of paint bound to dazzle both overnighters and the leisurely day tripper.
