Mbidi backs women’s football

NAMIBIA Football Association president Frans Mbidi reaffirmed their commitment to the women ‘s game during the Women ‘s Super League 2015/2016 season ending awards ‘ ceremony in Windhoek on Saturday.

Tura Magic, formerly the Jacqui Shipanga Academy, were officially crowned champions during the colourful event held at the NFA Technical Centre.

‘Once again, we have demonstrated a serious level of commitment to women ‘s football despite limited resources, and I must applaud all the clubs involved and the management of the league for a job well done,’ Mbidi told the NFA website.

He added that they were making a concerted effort to secure a substantive sponsor for the Women ‘s Super League (WSL) in order to improve and supplement development efforts already in place.

‘Our ladies must continue to play, and we will always try to make it happen. The fruits are there for all to see from national team performances and a change in behaviour in all the players. The ladies are learning a lot from our women ‘s football programmes and from that front, we are proud indeed. We again reiterate our call to other Namibians to come on board and make the WSL and women ‘s football bigger and better because the results can only get better,’ Mbidi stated.

After a long season spanning eight months, Tura Magic, who never relinquished top spot since match day one in September 2015, won the championship at a canter as they amassed 57 points.

The Magicians won all 19 of their matches to date, scoring a mammoth 235 goals and conceding just once. They can still add to their goal tally in their remaining fixture. The star studded Tura Magic side walked away with N$40 000, a trophy and medals.

Khomas Nampol Ladies, led by Brave Gladiators ‘ captain Uerikondjera Kasaona, took second place, ahead of Poly Babes in third place with 40 points. Nampol are on 43 points.

V Power Angels, who were awarded the Team of the Year prize, are fourth on 33 points.

Unsurprisingly, Magic dominated the individual awards with Zenatha Coleman, who recently moved to Europe, winning the Player of the Season award, while her teammate Anna Shikusho walked away with the Top Goalscorer award for her record 55 goals, which are two more than Coleman managed.

Shikusho scored all eight goals as Magic demolished Beauties 8 0 on Saturday.

The Coach of the Season award went to Shama Gure for guiding Magic to the dominant title triumph, with Anoushka Kordom winning the Best u19 Player of the Year prize.

The league will officially conclude on Friday when Okahandja Beauties are expected to play their outstanding games.

Financial constraints mean Beauties, who are accommodated at Football House for the week, have only played 12 games and are scheduled to play every day until Friday in order to complete their programme.
