Mark Kariahuua back with ‘Ovihambarare’

‘Ovihambarare’, which loosely translated from Otjiherero means satirical story telling, reflects social values in a culture that motivates people in their pursuit of a meaningful life, Kariahuua told unwrap.online.

“There is this post-lockdown trauma that we’ve all collectively been feeling. So, I wanted to create an event that brings people together and allows people to live and just laugh their problems away. This is also a show that will resonate with my generation,” he said.

Kariahuua added that the one-man show will be taped because it had not been done before even after selling out at the National Theatre of Namibia back in 2019.

“A large part of my career has truly been built off the word of mouth, that’s how I cultivated a following. I still feel like I’m more known in the underground scene and not the mainstream. People at my village faint when they see me, but here in Windhoek? (Laughing) So, I’m not saying I will put out a comedy special on film, but I’m saying everyone needs to keep an eye open for some exciting news,” he said.

The Fresh Prince of Okakarara also says there is a demand for comedy in Namibia although the country is still struggling with the proper infrastructure for comedians to become successful.

“Look at TikTok, everyone is a comedian now. Comedians are officially the new rockstars. I think arts industry is very hard to crack in Namibia. The infrastructure needed is almost non-existent. As an independent artist, I have to work extremely hard and also very smart to make this work. I’m a full-time artist who’s been doing this for 11 years. So, I take my work seriously, but I also have fun,” he says.

Kariahuua urges anybody who wants to work in the Namibian creative industry not to wait for an opportunity, but to go out there and get it.

“Any place, anywhere can be your stage. Be unapologetic and go for what you want. Having a support system is also very important, I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t have the support of everyone in my life to humble me,” he said.
