PASTORS’ children are commonly stereotyped as troublesome youngsters who opt for lifestyles not often condoned by their parents, the church or the community.
Renowned gospel singer Maranatha Goro speaks out about the weight of these types of expectations on ‘Pastor’s Daughter’. She asserts that she’s done trying to fit into a mould, and is ready to proudly be who she is.
“I just want to be Maranatha. I am done trying to please people.”
The single, produced by DJ Kboz, was released on the singer’s birthday and speaks about her journey within the church, touching on the depression that can sometimes come with being a pastor’s daughter, as well as suicidal thoughts.
“I have spoken to a few pastors’ children and we share the same sentiments. It’s even worse for me given that I am in the spotlight. People expect you to be holy and perfect but at the end of the day we are only human,” she says.
Maranatha also touches on how ‘church aunties’ who are supposed to be a helping hand, in many instances tend to love gossiping more than being leaders.
“I really wanted to tell it as it is, raw, real and authentic. Instead of being our solace, they turn our cries into gossip sessions. I have experienced them myself.”
Despite these challenges, Maranatha says she’s not turning away from her faith.
“A lot of pastors’ daughters have left the church because their grievances have not been heard, but I am not turning away. I am here to let people know that we are still human. It’s all about how we pick ourselves up and keep soaring.
