A man was arrested Saturday for allegedly hijacking a taxi in Windhoek on Friday.
City Police spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent Cillie Auala told this agency on Saturday the suspect, who is in his mid 30s, was apprehended while operating the taxi he allegedly hijacked from the owner at knife point in the Goreangab residential area.
The suspect was arrested in the vicinity of Kleine Kuppe near the Grove Mall loading passengers.
“The complainant opened a case this morning with the Namibian Police Force. We followed IT up and we also detected the hijacking on our CCTV cameras. Then this afternoon we managed to recover the vehicle and apprehend the suspect.”
Auala added that taxi hijacking is on the increase in the capital as four taxis have been hijacked this past week alone.
“I just want to caution taxi drivers out there that they must be extra careful and be mindful of who they are loading into their taxis.”
She further said taxi operators working late in the evening and in the early hours of the morning should be accompanied by someone trustworthy to be on the safe side.
