‘Luxury tourism’ expo to boost economy

MINISTER of environment and tourism Indileni Daniel has launched the Namibia Luxury Travel Market Expo to position the country’s tourism sector as a priority luxury niche.

The event is scheduled for November or December this year.

The launch took place at Africa’s Travel Indaba, a premier leisure tourism trade show, which took place in Durban, South Africa, from 11 to 14 May.

The event was was attended by international buyers, the media, and global exhibitors with thousands of African tourism suppliers.

Namibia was represented by the Namibia Tourism Board.

Daniel said tourism is not only a cornerstone of Namibia’s economy, but a key driver of employment, inclusive growth, and socio-economic transformation.

“Tourism plays a vital role in generating foreign exchange, supporting livelihoods, and advancing national development priorities,” the minister said.

“Our presence at this esteemed platform is not accidental, it is the result of deliberate and sustained efforts by the Namibian government to position tourism as a priority economic sector,” she said.

Daniel said through Vision 2030 and the sixth National Development Plan, Namibia has clearly articulated its ambition to transform into a globally competitive, sustainable, and inclusive economy, with tourism at the forefront of this agenda.

“It is our firm belief that tourism must be sustainable – protecting our natural and cultural assets for future generations, inclusive – empowering communities and creating shared prosperity, and competitive – positioning Namibia strongly in regional and global markets,” she said.

The minister said the new flagship initiative represents a strategic evolution of the country’s tourism offering.

The expo is designed to elevate Namibia’s positioning within the global luxury tourism segment, attract high-value travellers and targeted investment, and create a dedicated marketplace that connects international buyers with Namibia’s unique, high-end tourism products and experiences, she said.

“The Namibia Luxury Travel Market will serve as a national platform for curated engagement, bringing together luxury niche segment, specialised and expert operators, investors, travel designers, and global tourism stakeholders.

“It will showcase the very best of Namibia’s premium offerings, from our iconic desert landscapes and exclusive wildlife experiences to our cultural authenticity and personalised hospitality.”

Daniel said this initiative is also aligned with broader national objectives, particularly the drive to increase tourism value per visitor, diversify product offerings, and strengthen Namibia’s competitive advantage in niche markets.
