Karate in OshakatiKARATE-ZEN teams from Windhoek, Katima Mulilo and Oshakati will be at the Sam Nujoma Multi-purpose Centre at Ongwediva for the national championship this Saturday.Head coach of the Oshakati Karate-Zen Club, Sensei Freddy Mwiya yesterday said the championship will serve as a selection platform for the national team, to represent the country at the Commonwealth Karate-Zen Championship in Pretoria, South Africa in September. The event runs from September 24-26. The Commonwealth Karate-Zen event was shifted from India – where it was initially scheduled to be hosted – due to political turmoil in that country.Various Commonwealth member countries will participate in the championship in Pretoria, said Mwiya. The deputy minister of Sport, Pohamba Shifeta will officiate at Saturday’s event.Footballers off to NorwayTHE national under-14 girls’ soccer team left for Oslo, Norway yesterday to compete in the Norway Cup tournament.SCORE facilitator and trainer Raymond Vries this week said the young team would be accommodated at the Elverun community in Norway, where they will engage in inter-cultural exchange activities for a week.The team will then travel to Oslo, where they will compete in the Norway Cup tournament.’In the past years, we only sent boys to the tournament, but this year, it will be the first time to send a girls’ team,’ said Vries.Namibia first competed in the Norway Cup tournament in 2005. Vries, who will be leading the young girls, said the team will be back on August 2.The players are between 12 and 14 years-old.SCORE is non-profit, non-governmental, community development organisation that uses sport and physical activity as a medium of development.The under-14 team comprises Lovisa Mulunga, Anna Shikusho, Melanie Hikuam, Revival Goa-eises, Shariefa Apollus, Beadine van Wyk, Heidi Kebbel, Abrille Beukes, Claudia Gaingos, Miroldi Appollus, Anuschca Meyer, Eunice Gases, Cadisha Kazimbu, Eddelisisingh Naris, Brunelda Cloete and Melissa Eises. – Nampa
