Kuugongelwa-Amadhila urges Namibians to confront gender-based violence

National Assembly speaker Saara Kuugongelwa-Amadhila has called on Namibians to strengthen efforts against gender-based violence, including rising cases of online abuse.

In a message marking the end of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, which ran from 25 November to Wednesday, Kuugongelwa-Amadhila said the period should be a reminder of the sacrifices made by women whose activism and resilience helped secure current freedoms.

“We owe it to them and to future generations to ensure that the rights they fought for are protected in every sphere of our lives, including the digital world,” she said.

The theme for this year’s campaign is ‘Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls’.

She urged the public to speak out against violence, create safe digital spaces, and reaffirm that human rights “are non-negotiable, indivisible, and inviolable.”

Kuugongelwa-Amadhila also encouraged communities to support abuse survivors and stand together “to light a candle of hope.”

She also called on the nation to commit to a society free of violence against women and girls.

Cases of gender-based violence can be reported by calling 10111.
