The chief of the Kakurukouje Traditional Authority has approved the allocation of 42 000 hectares to build a smart city in the Kunene region.
The plan is the brainchild of Michael Petrus, the managing director of Kaoko Fria Investment.
Chief Vemuii Tjambiru from Etanga village confirmed the approval in a letter to the company on 25 June.
“Our office further approves the required identified land for the aforementioned development project that requires 42 000 hectares,” part of the letter reads.
In a statement issued on Friday, Petrus says the development integrates a state-of-the-art deep-sea port at Cape Fria/Angra Fria, which will be connected by railway to a dry port at Katima Mulilo.
“The railway will also serve as a major transport link for the northern region, offering residents and travellers the option of taking a smart train,” Petrus says.
According to Petrus, the route will pass through Kongola, Mbangani, Andara, Rundu, Nkurenkuru, Okongo, Eenhana, Onhuno, Engela, Okalongo, Outapi, Otsandi, Okahao, Omakange, Opuwo, Otjikaoko, and Cape Fria.
Petrus says while the dream of a smart city has been delayed by logistical and financial constraints, it will now be realised with a broader vision, stronger support, and a firm foundation of scientific, environmental, and technical feasibility.
