Kotze leads Namibia to huge victory

A brilliant century by JP Kotze led Namibia to a second landslide victory against Botswana in their T20 international series at Trustco United Park on Tuesday.

Kotze scored 101 not out as Namibia romped to a massive 124-run victory to take a 2-0 lead in the four match series, after they won the first match by 93 runs.

After being sent in to bat, Namibia amassed 240 for three wickets off their 20 overs and then restricted Botswana to 116 for two wickets to complete another one-sided victory.

Stephen Baard was dismissed early for 14, but Niko Davin and Gerhard Erasmus put Namibia in command with a century partnership for the second wicket.

They added 103 runs off only 54 balls before Davin was dismissed for 54 which came off 32 balls and included four sixes and two fours.

Erasmus followed soon after for 56 which came off only 27 balls and included four sixes and five fours.

Kotze then took centre stage with a brilliant innings as he smashed Botswana’s bowling attack to all corners of the ground. He actually took a while to get going, but once he got his eye in there was no stopping him.

In the 15th over he hit two successive sixes off Ameer Saiyed and in the 18th took 18 runs off Reginald Nehonde, which included four fours.

His finest moment, however, came in the 19th over when he hit an astonishing five successive sixes off Mmoloki Mooketsi to race to 93 not out, before completing his century in the following over. Unfortunately he only faced five balls, with Craig Williams gtaking a single off the first, and thereby missed the opportunity of joining a select few in world cricket who have hit six sixes in an over.

Kotze’s century came off only 43 balls and included nine sixes and seven fours.

Botswana never came close to the total, but they at least got in some batting practise with Karabo Mothlhanka and Hemal Pragji getting amongst the runs.

Mothlhanka scored 59 off 55 balls (one six and three fours), while Pragji scored 30 not out as Botswana reached 116 for two wickets off their 20 overs.

The third T20 international takes place at the same venue on Thursday starting at 14h00.
