Komsberg farm officer charged with attempted murder

THE police in the //Kharas region have arrested Chris Silver (33) on charges of attempted murder, negligent driving and assault with the intent to do grievous bodily harm.

His arrest on Monday came after a former casual worker at the Komsberg grape and citrus farm next to the Orange River near Ariamsvlei opened a case with the police.

Paulus Cleophas told The Namibian that Silver, the farm’s production officer, beat him up and ran him over with a quad bike while he lay on the ground last week.

//Kharas police crime investigations coordinator Chrispin Mubebo this week confirmed Silver’s arrest.

Mubebo said Silver appeared in the Karasburg Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday.

“The case was postponed to 30 March. Silver was not granted bail and remains in police custody at Ariamsvlei,” he said.

Cleophas claimed Silver assaulted him while he was on his way to collect wood with a friend.

He said they used a prohibited road on the way to the river and were caught by the management of the farm and security guards.

His friend managed to escape, but he was recognised by Silver who chased him with the quad bike and assaulted him, he said.

Thereafter, Silver reportedly made him lie on the ground and drove over him twice before spinning on him.

The farm’s management opened a case of trespassing against Cleophas.

Komsberg general manager Jacques Clift alleged Cleophas and his friend put rocks on the prohibited road.

They demanded that Cleophas and his friend leave Komsberg farm, he said.

Cleophas could, however, not leave due to his injuries.

Meanwhile, Henry Shimutikweni & Co Inc has offered to represent Cleophas on a pro bono basis.
