DURING the December holiday the Walvis Bay kite surfing community increased visibly as enthusiastic competitors from as far as Germany, Johannesburg, New Zealand, Austria, Switzerland, Mozambique and Windhoek joined local surfers at the lagoon.
Surfers eagerly waited for the fabled coastal south-west wind to pick up to at least 15 knots before a shower of rainbow-coloured kites started sliding up and down the lagoon from Lovers Hill up to the Raft. The more experienced kite surfers entertained curious spectators with spectacular jumps and the occasional water crash. A number of young and old sport lovers used the holiday time to learn this fairly new sport for which the Surf Centre in Walvis Bay is mostly responsible. After ten lessons most new kite surfers were able to enjoy the freedom of the water with safety as a priority.
