The National Theatre of Namibia’s (NTN) inaugural Blended Voices Choral Competition came to a spectacular close on Saturday, 26 April, with the Khomas Diverse Choir taking top honours and the grand prize of N$50 000.
The competition, which brought together six choirs from across Namibia, celebrated the fusion of contemporary Namibian music with choral traditions. Choirs performed two selected Namibian songs, including ‘Netira’ by Kalux, Stella Kapepo’s work, and Big Ben’s ‘Numba Numba’, alongside a prescribed piece performed by all groups.
Judge Roger Nautoro commended the participants for their creativity and daring interpretations.
“Many choirs stepped far beyond their usual repertoire, rearranging contemporary music pieces into stunning choral performances. It was both daring and inspiring to witness,” Nautoro said. He noted, however, that the mix of seasoned and emerging choirs created slight imbalances, suggesting that future editions introduce Intermediate and Advanced categories to level the playing field.

/Ae//Gams Vocal Ensemble secured second place, winning N$30 000, while Namib Camerata came third, impressing both the audience and judges with their artistry.
The event also boasted a full house, with all tickets sold out, a fact Nautoro praised as testament to both the effectiveness of the NTN’s marketing and the public’s growing enthusiasm for local cultural events.
NTN spokesperson Desiree Mentor expressed gratitude to all partners and sponsors.
“On behalf of NTN, we extend heartfelt thanks to the Namibian Broadcast Corporation, the National Arts Council of Namibia, and the Namibia Financial Institutions Supervisory Authority. Their support made it possible for us to host this unforgettable celebration of Namibian talent.”
Mentor added that the competition has injected fresh energy within the choral community and confirmed that Blended Voices will return in 2026, promising an even bigger and better platform for Namibian choirs.
The NTN also acknowledged the bravery, energy, and artistry all the choirs displayed, reaffirming its commitment to nurturing the arts and providing platforms for both established and emerging talent.
