The ||Kharas governor’s youth desk has assisted young people through training, scholarships, tertiary applications and other development opportunities since its establishment last year.
Youth desk coordinator Emma Abed says the desk was established after ||Kharas governor Dawid Gertze took office in July 2025 and officially launched it on 13 May.
“He gave us an office space in his office and said the only thing I should do is serve the youth,” Abed says.
She says the office provides information on opportunities such as the National Youth Development Fund, assists young people with applications for tertiary institutions and employment opportunities, and links them to youth development programmes.
“When they are not able to apply for something, we assist them,” she says.
Abed says 35 young people have participated in leadership training, while another 35 have attended financial literacy training.
The governor’s office has also facilitated 40 scholarships for young people to study at the Namibia Institute of Mining and Technology, provided school uniforms to 20 disadvantaged pupils, and funded international exchange opportunities for four young people, with three travelling to Germany and one to Russia.
Although the youth desk is based at Keetmanshoop, Abed says it serves the entire region through National Youth Council constituency chairpersons, regional councillors and youth volunteers who help share information with young people across the region.
