||Kharas youth encouraged to use youth development fund to build businesses

The ||Kharas governor’s youth desk held an information session at Keetmanshoop on Friday to help young people understand how they can benefit from the National Youth Development Fund (NYDF).

The event took place at the Keetmanshoop Multi-Purpose Youth Centre and was organised by the Office of the Governor together with the Regional Youth Desk.

It forms part of governor Dawid Gertze’s call to make 2026 the “year of action, unity and self-reliance”.

The NYDF is a government fund that supports young people who want to start or grow businesses and other income-generating projects.

Unemployed youth, students and young entrepreneurs attended the session, where they were guided on who qualifies for the fund, how to apply and what types of projects are supported.

Officials also trained participants on how to prepare strong business plans, including writing a clear summary, understanding their market and setting up a proper management structure.

Young people were also advised on how to manage money and use funding responsibly.

The organisers encouraged the youth to collaborate instead of competing against each other, saying teamwork and networking can help youth-led projects succeed across the ||Kharas region.

Speaking at the event, ||Kharas Regional Council chairperson Gerrit Witbooi urged young people to use the fund to change their lives and the local economy.

“We want young people to move from looking for jobs to creating jobs,” he said. “Not only to dream, but to build. Not only to hope, but to lead.”

Witbooi said the NYDF should be seen as a tool to help young people become economically independent and contribute to the long-term development of the region and the country.
