KBA Independence Cup starts Friday

WINDHOEK – The annual pre-season Khomas Basketball Association Independence Cup tournament gets under way on Friday until 21 March at the University of Namibia’s main campus in Windhoek.

Speaking to Nampa on Monday, competition director Micheal Mabuku said preparations are at an advanced stage. Nine men’s and three women’s teams have registered to participate.

The men’s teams are Namibia University of Science and Technology (Nust) Blues, Unam Wolves I and II, Unam Rebels, Afro Stars, Team Allies, Titans, Plaza Warriors and Bulldogs.

The women’s teams are Unam Sparks, Tomahawks and the Legends.

“The women’s teams will face each other once and the top two teams will advance to the finals. The tournament will be played according to FIBA rules,” Mabuku said.

The top two teams in the men’s competition will face each other in the semi-finals, with the winners clashing in the final.

The first matches on Friday will see Unam Wolves taking on Plaza Warriors at 18h30, while Nust Blues will face Unam Rebels at 20h00.

The defending champions are Unam Wolves and Unam Sparks, who will be looking at defending their status.

All matches will take place at Unam as KBA is still struggling to secure alternative venues in Windhoek.

The winners in both the men and women’s categories will receive medals and a floating trophy. No cash prizes will be awarded as the tournament remains unsponsored.

Meanwhile, KBA president Nigel Mubita told Nampa they will host a coaches and managers meeting at Nust on Monday night where various issues would be discussed.

These will include officials and officiating, courts, annual fees, sponsorship and other issues related to running the league.

Mubita said they are still negotiating with the municipality on the use of the UN Plaza basketball courts in Katutura. – Nampa
