Kavango West seals deal with Nored

THE Kavango West regional council on Monday signed a service delivery agreement with the Northern Regional Electricity Distributor (Nored) at Nkurenkuru, joining the rest of the north-eastern regions.

The agreement allows Nored to supply electricity to the region and perform other functions such as erecting streetlights and electrifying certain areas which do not have electricity yet.

Nored also supplies power to the Kunene, Omusati, Oshana, Ohangwena, Zambezi and Kavango East regions.

The agreement is aimed at ensuring that service managers and executives are held accountable during the execution of their tasks in line with government expectations in terms of the sustainability of the Electricity Distribution Industry.

The agreement will not only support Nored in pursuing greater efficiency in the delivery of services, but also defines collaborative arrangements between the stakeholders in the complexity of the service relationship.

Speaking during the signing ceremony, council chairperson Joseph Sivaku said the Kavango West is only getting on board now because the region was under the administration of the Kavango Regional Council that catered for both Kavango East and West.

The region was split in 2014 following a recommendation of the Fourth Delimitation Commission.

Sivaku said this agreement is important for ensuring service delivery to the region.

“It is important as a new region that we sign this agreement in order for electricity to reach all constituencies.”

He pointed out that the council is satisfied with the terms and conditions.

Although he could not reveal the magnitude of the council’s share in the revenue generated and infrastructure development, Sivaku said the more the council invests in the agreement, the more likely its shares will grow over the years.

Also at the signing ceremony, Nored chief executive officer Fillemon Nakashole said 50% of the region’s assets plus electricity units sold determines the shares of a particular council.

In the past, all regional councils used to get a combined 33% share across the board.

Nakashole expressed happiness that going forward, the two parties will work together for the betterment of the region’s people and especially on planning and coordination of activities.
