WINDHOEK – Namibia’s light welterweight 64kg boxer, Jonas Junias has been named the country’s flag bearer at the Rio 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Brazil.
Ten athletes will be representing Namibia from 5 to 21 August in Rio de Janeiro at the Summer Olympic Games.
A statement availed to Nampa by Team Namibia officials currently in Brazil stated that Namibia National Olympic Committee (NNOC) president, Abner Xoagub, on Tuesday handed over the honour to the Commonwealth Games and All Africa Games silver medallist.
“Despite his enormous success over recent years, the reserved boxer has set his sights on the grand prize at this year’s Olympic Summer Games, to win the gold medal. To achieve this goal, Junias has been in training for the past four months already, adding swimming training to his boxing routine to be in the best shape possible,” read the statement.
The athletes representing Namibia in Brazil are: Jonas Junias and Mathias Hamunyela (boxing); Gaby Ahrens (clay target shooting); Dan Craven, Michelle Vorster and Vera Adrian (cycling); and Helalia Johannes, Beata Naigambo, Alina Armas and Mynhardt Kauanivi (long distance running). – Nampa
