IT’S been 17 years since Robin Williams got spit out of a rogue board game and made sure nobody would ever be stuck inside it again.
Cut to present day and, clearly, the game didn’t sink deep enough because ‘Jumanji’ is back starring Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Nick Jonas.
Set 21 years after the original, ‘Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle’ (2017) is the second film in the ‘Jumanji’ franchise based on the Chris van Allsburg book of the same name.
Updated for a more modern audience, the film, directed by Jake Kasdan, swops the board game for a video version that sucks a group of teenagers into a perilous jungle.
A body swap adventure comedy that gives the nerds hot bodies and the popular kids diminutive and more corpulent attributes, ‘Welcome to the Jungle’ wisecracks through a plot that requires they work together to return a powerful jewel to its rightful place without using up their three lives.
Basic but fun, the film benefits from a watchable cast that includes Bobby Cannavale as the evil Van Pelt. See this if you liked the original. It’s a bloodless, feel-good rollick rated PG-13.
