JONAS Junias Jonas’s Tokyo Olympics campaign came to an end when he lost 5-0 to Australia’s Harry Garside in the Men’s lightweight Round of 16 on Saturday.
Although all five judges gave the fight to Garside, it was a close encounter with three scoring it 30-27 in Garside’s favour and two 29-28 for the Australian.
Jonas came out leading with his long jab, but Garside was the busier boxer from the start, landing some sharp punches and took the first round 10-9 on all five the judges’ scorecards.
Jonas stepped up the tempo in the second round, chasing the Australian ariound the ring and landing some shots, although Garside also landed some blows on the counter-attack.
Not much separated the two boxers in round two, with three judges scoring it 10-9 for Garside and two 10-9 for Jonas.
Jonas maintained the pressure in the third round, using his jab to good effect and landing a good right hook, but Garside did more work at close quarters and all five judges scored the round 10-9 in his favour, to hand him a unanimous 5-0 decision.
It was tough luck for Jonas, who certainly gave as good as he got, but maybe started a bit too slowly.
In some of the standout Round of 16 fights, Keyshawn Davis of the United States beat the top seeded Sofiane Oumiha of France on a second round technical knockout; the third seeded Andy Cruz of Cuba gave a great performance to beat Luke McCormack of Great Britain 5-0, and Gabil Mamedov of the Russian Olympic team was equally impressive, beating Louis Colin of Mauritius 5-0.
