Jafet Uutoni reaches Commonwealth final

NAMIBIA’s light-flyweight champion, Jafet Uutoni advanced to the final after he beat Waseem Muhammed of Pakistan in a boxing bout at the Commonwealth Games yesterday.

Defending champion Uutoni overwhelmed his opponent 10-1 to qualify for the final. Following his victory, Uutoni said he was determined to retain his title. Uutoni will now face Northern Ireland’s Paddy Barnes, who is also the reigning European champion in his division. ‘My main aim is to win the gold,’ Uutoni told AFP after outclassing Waseem. ‘I want to break a new record for my country and bring back two gold medals. ‘I want to take back my title. It is like my wife. I don’t want anyone to take my wife and if anyone tries to, I’ll stop them,’ Uutoni told AFP.Other Namibian boxers however failed to advance from their quarter-final bouts. Super-heavyweight Tobias Munihango lost on points to Cameroon’s Blaise Yepmou, while Elias Nashivale suffered a first round knock-out to Indian Vijender Singh.
