Many an artist and well-known personalities in Namibia have always given their opinion on the rise in gender-based violence in the country.
One such artist is the live-music maestro and beloved musician Jackson Wahengo.
According to Wahengo, gender-based violence (GBV) has been on the rampage for decades. Although it was slightly less prevalent in the past, the current state of the economy could be one of the main factors driving the rise in GBV cases.
He says violence is just violence regardless of who committed it, but when it comes to GBV more men are perpetrators.
“This could be due to our upbringing where we are taught that boys shouldn’t show emotion, they don’t cry and should be strong. In the end, it might have made us emotionless; someone with zero emotion can’t show compassion and reacts to violence quickly,” Wahengo says.
The talented singer says artists should do more to help curb GBV and he has in the past advocated for the rights of women to be upheld and respected and has showed up at many GBV protests to show his support,
“I have shown support in monetary form, however, I have always been an advocate for change on many fronts. We turn up when demonstrations are organised, and have always been vocal about the issue. When one has a following, especially of the youth who comprise young boys, they sometimes listen,” he says.
Wahengo also commented on the recent violence against former Mr Gay Namibia Wendelinus Hamutenya, who was allegedly stabbed four times by his husband, Immanuel Jeremiah, at their home in Katutura.
“Many people were mocking that sad occurrence, but violence is violence regardless of who commits it or who it’s directed at,” he says.
