Independent Patriots for Change (IPC) president Panduleni Itula on Thursday designated their spokesperson, Imms Nashinge, as its official opposition leader representative in parliament.
Itula announced this during a media briefing in Windhoek on Wednesday.
Itula said the decision was made following deliberation among senior party members.
IPC has rejected to take up the position in parliament, citing that the creation of such a position is unconstitutional.
This brought the party under fire from political analysts who deemed the IPC rejection as going against parliamentary proceedings.
“We have arrived to a decision with senior members of the party that it is possibl to compromise to allow a representative as leader of official opposition in parliament,” he said.
Itula said the Nashinge appointment is to ensure that parliament continues to carry on with its functions.
In accepting his appointment, Nashinge said he will lead the party in parliament in consultation with the party president.
Itula still remains the party president while Nashinge is the designated leader of official opposition in the National Assembly reporting directly to Itula.
