Insect-infested oshikundu sees 19 admitted to Rundu State Hospital

After consuming oshikundu on Friday, 19 people were rushed to Rundu State Hospital with suspected food poisoning.

Kavango West regional police commander commissioner Julia Sakuwa-Neo says the incident took place at Mavanze village on Friday morning.

The 19 people, all from one household, started vomiting and having diarrhoea shortly after consuming the traditional drink.

The beverage was prepared using drought-relief maize meal, reportedly infested with small insects.

Among those affected was a pensioner who was admitted to the intensive care unit in a critical condition, but who is believed to be recovering.

The other patients were reported to be in a stable condition.

Sakuwa-Neo says no foul play is suspected, as the woman who prepared the oshikundu also fell ill.

The hospital has collected a sample of the oshikundu for further investigation.
