HOTSPURS and United Stars made quick returns to the Namibia Premier League after winning promotion from the first division yesterday.
Both teams were demoted last season to the southern and northern streams respectively but have since regrouped and returned to elite league. Hotspurs beat the youthful Tura Magic to the SSFD title having trailed them by two points and one match heading into the final round of the league. On Saturday they claimed a 3-0 win at Unam before defeating Young Ones 1-0 yesterday to finish on 53 points, and narrowly edge-out Tura Magic by one point. The NSFD was equally – if not more – dramatic as United Stars beat hometown rivals Rundu Chiefs to the league crown. Stars, who have played one more game than their rivals, collected maximum points on Saturday against Eleven Warriors (2-0) followed by yesterday’s 1-0 victory in the derby over Chiefs.Chiefs (40 points) beat Cuca Tops 2-0 on Saturday and despite having a match in hand and a final round to play, they will not be able to reach United Stars’ 50 points total. The two clubs will do well to strengthen their sides if they are to survive amongst the big boys next season. Stars finished the 2009/10 campaign bottom of the Premiership on 15 points while Hotspurs – a point ahead – were equally dismal.
