An official of the Ministry of Home Affairs and Immigration was arrested at Usakos on Thursday on two charges under the Anti-Corruption Act and the Immigration Control Act.
According to Erongo crime investigations coordinator Erastus Iikuyu, the 33-year-old female administrative officer, Hilia Lisias, since 2013 allegedly used the home affairs office at Usakos, and her position, for gratification.
She allegedly issued national documents through fraudulent means to foreign nationals and assisted foreign nationals to remain in Namibia by issuing national birth certificates, “knowing it has been fabricated, forged or falsified”.
“She also made a false conduct representation by issuing national documents to foreign nationals,” said Iikuyu.
He said investigations are ongoing to determine how many such documents she issued, and how much she was paid in turn.
She appeared in the Usakos Magistrate’s Court yesterday (Thursday) and was not granted bail. The case was postponed for further investigation till 28 November.
