Holy Cross Convent gives to SPCA

With the hope of improving the living standards of animals, the Holy Cross Convent Primary School recently donated tins of money to the Society For The Prevention Of Cruelty To Animals (SPCA).

The initiative is one of several outreach programmes at the school. Their main project is to raise funds and donate toiletry gift baskets to the cancer ward at the Windhoek Central Hospital.

The SPCA initiative started at the beginning of the school's last term and pupils from the school collected money into the SPCA tins, every Friday.

“Animals are like family and the SPCA Windhoek is crawling with uncared for animals. We therefore started this initiative to teach the pupils to not only care for themselves but also the animals, thus teaching them how to be responsible,” says a teacher at the school, Ilka van Niekerk.

She added that during a recent visit to the SPCA, she noticed that some of the kennels that the animals are living in are worn out and with the rainy season fast approaching she took on the task of raising money to fix them.

Rayne Salmon, a Grade 7 pupil at the school and also a volunteer with the SPCA, said it was important to care for animals and said she was proud to be part of a school that cares and is willing to help where they can.

“We are very thankful for the donation because it will help to cover the cost of the animals' welfare and anyone who would like to donate or volunteer with us is welcome, provided you are 15 years and older but we also make exceptions when a younger volunteer is very keen to assist with the upkeep of the animals,” says Allen Uys of The SPCA.
