Holiday camp a treat for underprivileged children

A TOTAL of 49 children from Rundu, Omaruru and Otavi gathered in Windhoek for the annual three-day BSDaT holiday camp.

It is the fourth year BSDaT is running the camp, to which children from orphanages and those without parents are invited.The camp started on Saturday and the children participated in various sport activities, a treasure hunt, water games and cookie baking over the three days. ‘The children were chosen as they never get to go on holiday and many have never been to Windhoek. They are the most vulnerable in their respective towns and in need of a holiday away from their circumstance,’ said Susanne Lachmann, the organiser of the holiday camp. The children were all between the ages of 13 and 15 and they were divided into seven teams. Each team had a mentor from the International School in Windhoek. Hilkka Nakawa, one of the participants, said this was the first time she had attended the camp. ‘I am having so much fun, it is just too short,’ she said. Marius Tsaraob from Otavi was just as excited. ‘I had nowhere to go on holiday and then I got the opportunity to come to Windhoek for a few days which was so great, as I have never been to the capital,’ he said.
