Having a Vision and Setting Goals

Vision in general has different meanings.

In business, it is used in a business plan as a guidance or a company’s map indicating what a company wants to become.

In science, it is the ability to use your eyes to see. Church leaders define vision as a way God of communicating with us.

But what I want to talk about self-vision.

What drives you every morning when you wake up? Self-vision (as I call it) has to do with knowing what you want to become in life or whom you want to become a few years from now.

Vision is the ‘why’ – what you want to get out of life and when you look back in a couple of years, what do you want to see? And on the other hand we have goals. These indicate how you are going to achieve that vision.

Now to create a vision, you should begin by identifying your core values, your passion, what you believe to be your purpose and how you envision your life. Remember to be specific and clear.

My mother once told my siblings and I that when you do not have a vision in life, it is the same as having no direction. You are like a piece of paper heading whatever direction the wind is blowing because it has got no direction of its own.

Now imagine your life as that piece of paper, without direction. When life goes left, you too go left and when life says ‘let’s go right’, all you do is follow.

Your life does not have to be that way. You need to learn to stand your own ground and have direction of your own.

Every day, ask yourself the following: Who am I? Who do I want to become? What do I enjoy doing most in life? How do I turn that passion into something successful? Am I currently doing what I am supposed to be doing to achieve my dreams? If not, then what can I actually do to achieve my dreams?

The point is, have a vision so you know why you are doing what you do and set goals on how to achieve your vision.
