Lavinia Haitope produced a great performance to win the Two Oceans Half Marathon in Cape Town yesterday morning.

In a dominant display, Haitope took the lead from the start and went on to pull away from the chasing pack to claim a commanding victory.

She won the 21,1km event in one hour 14 minutes 36 seconds, to finish more than two minutes ahead of Fortunate Chidzivo of Zimbabwe (1:16:29) while Emma Browne of Sourth Africa came third in 1:18:09.

Haitope’s victory underlined her status as one of Africa’s leading long distance runners, and was just the latest accolade after some great performances over the past year.

In June last year she won the elite women’s category at the Nelson Mandela Bay Half Marathon in Gqeberha, South Africa, while in February this year she also won the Kazungula Bridge Half Marathon in Botswana.

With yesterday’s victory Haitope followed in the illustrious footsteps of Helalia Johannes, who has won the Two Oceans Half Marathon on a record five occasions.

She won the title four times in six years between 2006 and 2011, setting a record of 1:11:57 in 2011, and then eight years later in 2019 stormed later back with a fifth title in a new record time of 1:10:29 which still stands today.
