African Stars FC’s newly appointed head coach, Gerald Guther, says he has signed a two-year contract with the Namibia Premier Football League champions.
Guther tells The Namibian Sport that alongside leading the first team, a key part of his mandate is to oversee and enhance their newly established Youth Academy.
“I will be working closely with the academy coaches to define and implement a unified technical philosophy and ensure aligned principles in how African Stars plays, train, and develop talent for the future.
“At a club of this magnitude, defending and winning the premier league title is always priority number one,” he says.
He says competing for domestic cup silverware is equally vital.
“Regarding our upcoming CAF Champions League tie against Orlando Pirates, our target is clear, we are not going there merely to participate but we are preparing to compete fiercely and push for a result.”
He adds that his immediate focus is instilling his tactical philosophy so the squad clearly understands its identity on the pitch.
“While Pirates benefit from active competitive match rhythm, we cannot allow that difference to become an excuse. We must maximise every opportunity to build match fitness,” Guther says.
“We have scheduled high-intensity friendlies and our board is working diligently to secure a high-profile fixture before the tie. We will control what we can and enter the match fully prepared.”
Guther says African Stars boast quality and character.
“While Pirates may have greater squad depth, the quality within our group is more than capable of competing over a two-legged tie.
“Facing one of the continent’s biggest clubs provides natural motivation. Our players will give everything. Furthermore, we have a strong core of experienced players who have played in international fixtures and previous CAF Champions League campaigns. That big-match experience will be invaluable,” Guther says.
He says African Stars are maintaining maximum intensity in their training sessions to keep players sharp, reactive, and physically primed.
He adds that they refuse to hide behind obstacles and are putting their heads down, remaining thoroughly professional, and making the absolute most of their preparation time.
“Regarding new players, the squad integration has been remarkably smooth. Our tactical approach won’t be passive, we will not simply sit back and defend for 90 minutes.”
Guther says they have a goal to protect, but also have an attacking game plan to execute at speed.

“Hearing that our supporters are planning the journey to Gaborone is profoundly humbling. I know the incredible passion this fan base carries, and having them in the stands through thick and thin provides an immense psychological boost.
“As Namibians, we are a small nation in numbers, but we show unmatched unity when taking on foreign opposition. We truly appreciate their sacrifices, and our goal is to give them a performance they can be proud of,” the coach says.
He says it is paramount for them to maintain high morale alongside physical and mental resilience that will give them that necessary competitive edge.
“On paper, many will view this as a David vs Goliath match up and we all know how that story ended. As a coach, I balance optimism with realism. We respect our opponents, but we believe in our collective strength and will face this challenge together.
“My career has not been built on shortcuts, it has been built on tenacity, relentless work ethic, and a deep tactical understanding of the game.”
Guther says his core strength lies in player development and extracting peak performance out of every individual in the squad.
“I believe that dedication to player growth is what the leadership recognised in me. I am here to bring drive, discipline, and tactical clarity to the club.”
Guther says he looks forward to proving that value to the board, the players, and the team’s extraordinary supporters this season.
