Water and sanitation challenges could soon become a thing of the past for Groot Aub residents as the City of Windhoek steps up investment in infrastructure and basic services to keep pace with the area’s growing population.
Over the weekend, the city engaged residents of Groot Aub, situated between Windhoek and Rehoboth, during a public meeting, providing updates on several projects aimed at improving living conditions in the community of about 20 000 people.
Among the key developments are the upgrading of a water pipeline, plans to construct a larger water reservoir and improvements to the sewer network.
“Residents were also briefed on progress towards improved electricity services, road grading, housing and land management, street lighting and waste management,” reads a statement by the City of Windhoek.
The city further outlined plans for the phased development of a community park, which is expected to provide residents with improved recreational facilities.
The engagement also brought direct opportunities to the community, with unemployed youth set to benefit from free learner driving licence training through the city’s community development programme, in collaboration with NaTIS.
The city said the various interventions demonstrate its commitment to working with Groot Aub residents to improve basic services and create a cleaner, better-serviced and more sustainable community.
The projects come as Groot Aub continues to experience population growth, increasing pressure on existing infrastructure and municipal services.
