Granny celebrates 110 years

MARTHA Afrikaner, a Gibeon resident, will this Saturday be celebrating her 110th birthday in style.

The devout Christian who had her birthday on Sunday, 27 September will be commemorating her special day with friends, family and members of her community.

The theme for her birthday party will be ‘reconciliation and peace’ with the colours red and white, as she is described as wanting peace for Namibia.

The party will take place on a family farm in the Gibeon district where she grew up and also helped raise many children of the community with an iron fist, according to her grandson Wallace Finnies.

Finnies also said that she is very involved with the issues in the country like the water crisis and that she attentively listens to the radio to keep herself up to date with what is happening in the nation.

Finnies described her as a “young soul” who is still very healthy both mentally and physically.

“Very few people get to reach that age and she is doing it well,” he quipped. Finnies also added that despite on her many years on earth she is positive that as long as God doesn’t need her in heaven, she is in the right place. “If God needs me, I’ll go,” he quoted her as saying.

The family matriarch was born in 1905 on a farm near Gibeon. She is one of a few people in the country to live to this age, making her six years younger than the world’s oldest current living person.
