Govt to strengthen GBV, crime prevention efforts countrywide

The Cabinet has directed the ministries of gender equality and child welfare and of home affairs, safety and security to urgently intensify nationwide sensitisation and awareness campaigns to respond to a “disturbing rise” in murders across the country.

The campaign will focus on educating communities about the consequences of crime, substance abuse and gender-based violence (GBV).

The directive announced on Thursday follows on a number of murders reported across the country.

“The murders are allegedly linked to insurance-related schemes, land disputes and religious beliefs,” information and communication minister Emma Theofelus said in an announcement of Cabinet decisions on Thursday.

In addition to the prevention efforts, the Cabinet directed the Ministry of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security together with the Ministry of Health and Social Services to develop strategies to provide medical and psychological support to inmates suffering from mental health conditions.

Moreover, the Cabinet has instructed the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology to scale up nation-building campaigns to promote unity and strengthen national identity.

All government offices, ministries and agencies, local authority councils and traditional authorities have been urged to foster social cohesion and national unity to address the GBV crisis in Namibia.
