President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah on Wednesday announced that more than 51 000 persons with disabilities in Namibia received assistance from the government during the 2025/26 financial year.
Nandi-Ndaitwah said the initiative aims to enhance mobility and promote full participation in society.
More than 1 235 wheelchairs were also purchased and distributed to people with disabilities.
Nandi-Ndaitwah gave the figures during her state of the nation address in the parliament.
“The revised National Policy on Disability was launched on 27 October 2025, reaffirming Namibia’s commitment to equality, dignity and non-discrimination for all citizens,” she said.
On the disability affairs programme, she said 217 students across all 14 regions benefited from the education support programme, totalling N$7.8 million.
Additionally, 1 940 beneficiaries with severe disabilities received support tailored to their specific needs.
Under the indigenous minority and vulnerable communities programme, N$123.9 million was spent to purchase food for the feeding programme, she said.
Students were also registered at various higher learning institutions, with expenditure of N$10.3 million on tuition fees, N$5.9 million on accommodation and N$6.3 million on allowances.
Families of 193 deceased persons from indigenous minority communities received burial support totalling N$1.8 million.
Following the successful rollout of national documentation for indigenous minority communities, a total of 24 959 national documents have been issued to date.
