Gladiators impress on Ghana tour

The Brave Gladiators defeated Ghana’s Black Princesses 2-1 at the Lizzy Sport Complex in Accra on Friday to make it two wins from two on their three-week training tour in Ghana in preparation for the 2014 CAF Women’s Championships.

The Gladiators were immediately put under pressure by their more fancied hosts, who took the lead five minutes before halftime.

The Gladiators however regrouped well and coach Jacqui Shipanga gave an inspirational halftime talk as they produced a great comeback in the second half.

The Gladiators soon equalised after Iyakondjelwa Amukoto was brought down on the right flank and Zenatha Coleman stepped up to curl the freekick into the corner of the net.

With 16 minutes to go, Namibia took the lead for the first time when Germany-based playmaker Thomalina Adams volleyed home a cross into the penalty area.

Shipanga brought on defender Ester Amukwaya as a substitute in the final minutes to add some stability to the defence as Namibia held on to record a 2-1 victory over the Ghanaians.

In their first match of the tour the Gladiators played against Ideal Ladies FC which plays in the Ghana Ladies First Division and it was Namibia who won 3-0 with goals from Zenatha Coleman and a brace from Juliana Skrywer.

The Namibia team is based at the state-of-the-art Lizzy Sports Centre in Accra and has been boosted by the presence of their German-based trio of Adams, Lorraine Jossob and Vewe Kotjipati.

According to team officials players such as goalkeeper Agnes Kauzuu, defender Stacey Naris and midfielder Emmerencia Fredericks have also shown good form on the tour.
